Abstract
1. One hundred and fifty-seven cases of penetrating and blunt abdominal traumas who were admitted during the period of Dec. 1971-Sep. 1975(3years and 9 months) and treated at Department of Surgery of Hangang Sung Sim Hospital are subjected to analysis on various clinical aspects.
2. There are 39 occasions (24. 8%) of penetrating injuries and 118 occasions(75.2%)of blunt abdominal traumas. Stabs are predominent in the former group whiled traffic accident arid blows are the leading, causes in the latter group. This pattern of injury could be a reflection of particular geographic characteristic.
3. The most common intraperitoneal organ injured is small bowel {22.5%) followed by spleen, retroperitoneal injury, liver and kidney.
4. The mortality is 12% (20 cases), which is similar to other reports in the nation: It was occurred in 7.7% of penetrating injury and 14.4% of blunt traumas:
5. Multiple injury and the amount of whole blood transfusion are the two, main factors related to the mortality.
Since abdominal trauma seems to be increasing in incidence, Lately and the modality of trauma tends to be complicated it would be adequate to emphasize the importance and the improvement of preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative- management.
